Research Institute Without Walls (RIWW) was originally founded to provide training and research on the mental health needs of persons who face persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In response to the increased need for mental health clinicians who are trained to evaluate asylum seekers, RIWW has expanded its mission to provide training and mentoring on the mental health challenges of all asylum seekers. RIWW also provides training to attorneys on working in a trauma-informed way with traumatized clients and information on how to manage secondary trauma.
Vision Statement
The vision of the San Francisco Bay Area Asylum Mental Health Project is that asylum seekers will receive pro bono mental health evaluations so that their history of reported traumatic events and reported symptoms are fully considered in their asylum hearing.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Project is: (1) To train volunteer licensed mental health clinicians to conduct evaluations of asylum seekers and to serve as expert witnesses; and (2) Link immigration attorneys and community agencies who are seeking pro bono evaluations of asylum seekers with our trained network of volunteer clinicians.
